Help with pawpads

posted by: niennis in fursuit

Hello!
I'm making some sock paws for a costumer and I've run into a problem. I usually use flip flops for the pawpads (I don't recommend this), but the pink flip flops I bought suck. They're falling apart and look just terrible.
Does anyone have a good (fairly inexpensive) idea on how to make durable, outdoor, pink pawpads?

Thanks!
Niennis

Thinking of buying first fursuit

Hi everyone, I'm new here and just anted to pose a question to some suiters.

I'm currently thinking of buying a fursuit for myself, and I was curious to see just how some people AFFORD theirs. Even finding reasonable prices, how did you justify buying a fursuit (partial or full)?

I played around with making one for my girlfriend (http://www.furaffinity.net/view/3026483) but unfortunately my new job limits the amount of time I have to work on suits, I'm even thinking of farming out the arms and tail for the head I made above.

I'm currently making a decent salary at my new job, and my bills are minimal, but it's still really hard to drop hundreds of dollars on such a luxury item.

I just wanted to see what other people's situations were like. Were bills tight? When you got your suit did you regret buying it, knowing how much you spent?

Luckily for me my old boss is looking for me to do some freelance work, so I may be able to bust some ass and cover some of the cost if I do decide to get a suit. Even with that though, I'd have to dip into some of my savings.

Let me know what you think! I figured the best source to ask were the people who know best. Should I get a suit or not. Thanks. =)

Anteaters and Ventilation

Dec. 29th, 2009 | 07:40 pm
posted by: calicofeathers in fursuit

So I'm in the middle of a blue anteater head at the moment. The general foamwork is basically done, but I do have one question: how am I going to ventilate this sucker? Naturally, there's no moving jaw, and the nose would be nearly impossible to hollow out considering it's two pieces of foam glued together. Also, with the nose being as narrow as it is, I doubt there would be any air exchange that way even if I did manage to hollow it out. The eyes will be toony, but I'm planning on trying out sunglass lenses for the pupils, so no vent there. (I had problems with the chiffon I used diffusing yellow light weirdly) I'm thinking my only other option is small holes in the ears. I don't want to try to stick mesh or chiffon anywhere it shouldn't be, since that always looks awkward.

Any ideas? Maybe I should try to hollow out the mouth and stick a makeshift snorkel in there? o_O

So I'm nervous, I am making a mask for the first time (Wolf mask). This is my progress so far. I know it needs a LOT of work and build-up and shave-downs yet, plus ears, etc. Also, I am absolutely broke right now so I am using what materials I have on hand. I used the ball-cap method and am going to do hand-painted Follow Me eyes in a semi-realistic way if I can using some concave plastic. The placement of where the eyes will go is just markered in. I think it looks alright on the profile shot, but the frontal shot something's just not right with the eyes. I'll be using Tearduct vision or some mesh below the eyes.
Advice would greatly appreciated but please be gentle. I'm a sensitive deerkitty o.o I bruise easily lol.
Thanks everyone!

let me know if these pics don't work. First time using this thing. )

Webbing?

How do I shot web? j/k

So I was working on this otter partial a while ago and never got a good chance to finish his hand paws.
Now that I've gotten to them I've ran into whats turned into a pretty puzzling question. How do you put webbing between the fingers?
I've tried a couple time to hand sew it in after the hand was sewn up, and once actually had the webbing on the inside. ((I don't know why I even thought that would work.))
I'm thinking of doing the webbing fleece unless anyone has another good suggestion.

Foam Carving Curious

Dec. 29th, 2009 | 02:34 am
posted by: crisis_the_hat in fursuit

I'm not sure how related this is, but more so a peek of curiosity...

www.steltercreativewoodworks.com/STELTER1/Foam_Sculptinx.html

Has anyone attempted to sculpt foam remotely this smooth for their heads? (via the pictures in the above link)

Would it be necessary to try and carve this crazy smooth for a head in general?

Or any other part of a fursuit?

Also- tool wise, for trying to smooth out parts on foam (not super smooth, but smooth enough to one's personal desire), what has worked for you so far?

I've heard the majority being electric knives and later scissors for smaller stuff- any specific brands that really stand out or have worked really well for you? Or perhaps any other tools that one could use to achieve smoother carving? (aside from practice that is)

That's all~ Just wondering.

http://s250.photobucket.com/albums/gg261/jpupbob/?action=view&current=Yenaheadbase2.jpg&newest=1

Now, I know the eyes are a slight bit lopsided, but that because they are only sitting right on the foam. It doesn't have a nose yet, and I think the jaw is a little lopsided, but im alright with that.
Anything you see wrong? What do you like about it? Any information will be useful.
Thank you :)

Quad question

I'm currently making an Ifrit quad suit commissioned by a friend of mine and i had a few questions. Since we are trying to minimize the cost and the uncomfortable heat that using multiple foam layers would cause, I was thinking of ways to make this all work. When I went to sit down on my beanbag, and idea struck. Has anyone ever made a suit with a beanbag like build? Like one layer of foam on the under shirt and an air pocket filled with the little styrofoam beans covered by another layer overtop holding it all in? I don't have any clue if it will work but I thought that I'd ask.

I also would like to ask, would fleece or felt be better for a fur subsitute? Ifrit doesn't have very long fur on his body aside from his head and fur can be very expensive when you can only find good quality fur on rare occasions...

If anyone has any sugestions or tips I'd love to hear please! I've never done a quad before but what I learn from making this one will be used on my 2011 project! Sesshomaru in his demon dog form!

So, I was going to keep this A Secret® 'til I debuted her at FC, but I think these fiber optic whiskers are too cool not to share. I know it's probably been done before, but installing them was a first for me ^_^. And I absolutely adore how they came out. I also wanted to see how bright the white fur was under blacklight.

Video under the cut... )

Better funfoam

Sounds stupid, probably is. But this irks me.

I'm trying to use a bit of funfoam on a suit head. The inside of the ears. Slow process, won't do any major work on it until after FC. But the problem still can be looked at as it'll give me time. The funfoam I've found at Micheal's, Jo-Ann's, Wal*Mart, and K-Mart all have the same issue. They have foot-prints on them, torn in corners, holes in the middle, and trashed. I thought about buying the foam in a pack, but as I only need two sheets ($1 total for the two) it seems stupid to spend $5 or more on a pack of sheets I'm not going to need. And most of the time you get one sheet of each color, rather than one pack of one color. I haven't found one pack of one color.

Is there another store to buy funfoam at? Good foam, that isn't trashed beyond salvaging? I don't have a Hobby Lobby in my state, I'm afraid, or I'd look there. The main problem is that the stores listed above are public "everything" stores, and not serious crafting stores. So kids go in there, rip it up, play with it, and leave it on the floor and no one cares. Is there any place better?

Got any Sparkle Scraps?

posted by: demofax in fursuitauctions

Hey all, not very familiar with posting to communities so I hope this is right. I don't know how effective this will be but it's worth a shot.

I'm looking for some large-ish scraps of DF's 4'' Sparkle Fur: http://www.distinctivefabric.com/fabric.php?product=SPRFUR1.

-Yellow: First i'm looking for a piece in yellow that's a good enough size to make a big poofy head tuft from.
-White: Secondly i'm looking for either approx. one square foot (12'') of white as a whole piece or separate smaller pieces that roughly make up that size. It doesn't have to be that size exactly, that's just a rough estimate or how much i'm looking for. More or less is just as welcome!

I'm in the UK and can pay for all costs + shipping with PayPal.

Thank you in advance!

Foam bases and lavender fur??

Hey everyone! I'm really kind of nervous to make my fox's head. I'd really just like to get a foam base, and when I messaged an artist to see if they accepted that type of commission, she directed me here.

So is anyone here selling foam bases? I need a female fox foam base, and I can do the eyes. I just need some nice smooth foamwork <3 I'd be willing to pay well! <3

Also!!

I want to know if anyone can find ANY OTHER lavender fur but the one at imstuffedfur.com

Seriously, don't suggest that website. I know they have it, thanks. lol. I don't want to pay 23$ a yard for it when the same type of fur is 18$ elsewhere.

So if you could link me to some lavender fur I will greatly greatly appreciate it!!

Thank you guys so much!!
